FAQ Content

The ‘frequently asked questions’ help solve typical problems or difficulties. Please also use the manual, which is also available on the DVD as a PDF document. If you don’t know what is the next step to take to solve the mystery of the disappearance of the case, take a look at the walkthrough, which is also available on the DVD. But first ask the characters in the game, and particularly the policeman. He can be very helpful.

Help for technical problems can be found here.

Terms following an angle bracket can be found in the help section of the manual or in the file “lost-in-help” accompanying this DVD.

This document answers the following typical questions:

  1. I cannot start/continue the game or repeat a chapter.
  2. I cannot leave a room.
  3. How do I communicate with a game figure?
  4. Dialogues keep disappearing from the dialogue window.
  5. I do not know how to continue in a dialogue – there are no new dialogues displayed.
  6. I do not have any subtitles.
  7. Game figures are not reacting when I want to show them something.
  8. How do I get help on the story?
  9. I don’t understand anything and need translation help.
  10. Some game figures do not react when I click on them.
  11. I cannot hear anything/much.
  12. I would like to do the exercises but do not know where they are.
  13. The installation takes a long time.
  14. I have another question.

1. I cannot start/continue the game or repeat a chapter.
To start the game, click on ‘start new game’ in the >selection menu. To continue with a game, click on ‘continue last game’. As soon as you have completed a chapter, you can replay it from the >selection menu without affecting your game score (in the plot of the game). Select a chapter by clicking on it and then click on ‘replay chapter’. If you wish to stop during this replay, (before completing the chapter), click on the door in the >game menu, as you would in the ‘real’ game to stop the chapter replay. You land back in the selection menu. Read also the paragraph ‘start game’ in the manual.

2. I cannot leave a room.
To leave a room, you have to click on at least one door. If there are no doors in the room, there are three possibilities, at least one of which you can choose from:
a) You can click on the bus or taxi driver.
b) You can click on a city plan (outdoors) or signs with location details (in rooms, e.g. the library).
c) You can enter the second part of the room via the right and/or left edge of the picture in which Max/Sophie are. In this case, pay attention to the cursor. It turns into a horizontal pointing hand (see manual: >cursor (pilot)). Click with the left mouse button on the edge of the picture to leave this location. Sometimes you are not able to leave the room as not all the problems have been solved to be able to continue with the story. In this case, the game figure will make it clear to you that you cannot change locations yet.

3. How do I communicate with a game figure?
You communicate with the game figures via a >dialogue window. To open this window, click either with the left mouse button on one of the game figures or open the >game menu at the bottom of the screen and click on the mouth. In lost in…, there are >dialogue partners and extras. You cannot communicate with the extras. If the dialogue window is open, click on one of the sentences offered in the left half of the window. Sophie/Max then say these sentences. After that, the >dialogue partner then reacts. On the right side of the >dialogue window, the >dialogue protocol you will see all the sentences already spoken in the course of the game. By clicking with the left mouse button, you can play them all again. The sentences activated by the >dialogue protocol have no influence on the events in the current game. The mouths of the game figures do not move correspondingly. Beginners to the language are recommended to use the >translation help.

4. Dialogues keep disappearing from the dialogue window.
Some dialogues on the left side of the >dialogue window disappear before they have been played. This is deliberate. With your decision for certain sentences, you select certain routes through the game. Other routes and reactions are thus excluded, Use the function >replay chapter to take alternative dialogue routes.

5. I do not know how to continue in a dialogue – there are no new dialogues displayed.
It sometimes happens that you are not able to find any more dialogues on the left side of the >dialogue window (except the standard dialogues “please repeat that” and “good bye”). To be able to communicate further, use the >inventory objects. Some information you can only receive when you confront your dialogue partner with objects from your >inventory bag. If your game figure is not able to tell you any thing useful about an object, try another game figure. The police officer is always worth a try. He has quite a few useful tips up his sleeve. If you have tried all these and are still not getting anywhere, it might be the case that you have overlooked an object in one of the rooms which you need to pick up and use. A key, for example, which opens a door to a new dialogue partner. Look in all of the rooms for objects which you can pick up (with the left mouse button click, the >cursor changes into an open hand; grasper). Take care to look through all of the rooms. Some of the rooms are divided into two (see aove a room).

6. I do not have any subtitles.
In the basic setting of lost in…, the subtitles are off. You can turn them on by clicking the flag in the >game menu In the resulting window, you can switch the subtitles on or change the language of the subtitles. For more information on the subtitles and their use, please read the document ‘learning by playing’.

7. Game figures are not reacting when I want to show them something.
Either this is an extra which is not actively involved in the game and with whom you cannot communicate. Or you are giving the game figure his/her object too ‘exactly’. The game figures react with their whole bodies so try giving for example the taxi driver your credit card not into his hand but rather onto the middle of his body. See also: >inventory objects in the help section of the manual.

8. How do I get help on the story?
The first and most important help features are the game actions (see: I do not know how to continue in a dialogue). A special helper is the police officer at the police station (can be reached via the forecourt of the station). If you do not know how to continue in the plot, you can go up to him at any time and ask him questions relevant to the case. The police office cannot, however, offer any assistance on technical or operational questions. If you have any questions on these areas, please consult the manual and help documents in the >accompanying material on the DVD.

9. I don’t understand anything and need translation help.
There are three important functions which provide you with translation help when you are having comprehension problems.

- Subtitles
o for dialogues: Open the >game menu and click on the flags there. A window opens where you can turn the subtitles on and off.
o in detail views (of letters, signs, etc.): Click with the right mouse button on the text so that the subtitles appear. With difficult texts, the subtitle translation also functions when the subtitles are off. Otherwise, turn on the >detail view and turn on the subtitles using the flags in the >game menu. Then open the >detail view again.

- Single-word translation:
Click with the right mouse button on the single words of the sentences in the >dialogue window. The words will be translated according to the context of the sentence.
- Previewing the subtitles: To see the subtitles of a text before it is spoken press the ‘ctrl’ key on your keyboard. Keep the key pressed whilst clicking with the right mouse button on the chosen sentence of the dialogue window. More exact information can be found in the help section of the manual under >translation help.

10. Some game figures do not react when I click on them.
In the game, there are a total of 12 human >dialogue partners and a bird with which Sophie/Max can communicate. All other game figures are inactive extras.

11. I cannot hear anything/much.
Check to see if your loudspeakers are connected correctly and also if the sound settings of your computer are correct. The volume of the dialogues and sounds can be adjusted via the loudspeaker in the >game menu at the bottom of the screen. If there are still problems after that, please refer to ‘technical help’ in the document.

12. I would like to do the exercises but do not know where they are.
In each chapter of the game, there are a number of language learning exercises (>interactive learning platform). To do the exercises, click on the poster with the red-haired woman from the game interface. Via the poster you jump to the selected exercise which corresponds to the learner level of the current chapter. You can click on the same poster more than once and will jump to a new exercise each time. If you complete all the exercises, you will have completed all the training elements necessary for the current chapter. If you wish to complete a series of exercises, open the >game menu and click on the doctoral cap. You will land in the >selection menu from where you can change directly to the >interactive learning platform.

13. The installation takes a long time.
The installation of the DVD can take up to 25 minutes due to the high quality of the sound material. If the installation should take longer, your computer probably does not fulfil the minimum requirements specified on the DVD original packaging. You can also find the minimum requirements in the manual and in the document ‘technical help’ in the directory >accompanying material.
